Ashirwad Swain (Nayagarh) and Nilsu Pattnayak (Cuttack) justified their status as top seeds by winning senior and junior titles respectively in Cuttack District Chess Championship, which concluded here at Barabati Stadium today.
Ashirwad garnered 7.5 points out of a possible eight to receive the trophy and a cash prize of Rs 4,000. Smaraki Mohanty (Cuttack) and Johnson Sahoo (Khurda) finished second and third respectively. In the junior category, Nilsu finished at the top of the table with 7.5 points. He received the trophy and a cash prize of Rs 2,000.
As many as 186 players from different districts participated in the three-day tournament, which carried a total prize fund of Rs 19,300. Organised by Cuttack District Chess Association (CDCA), the eight-round tournament was inaugurated by Income Tax Principal Commissioner (Cuttack Range) Ashok Kumar Satpathy.
Income Tax Commissioner (Appeals) Paramita Tripathy handed over the trophies at the closing function. CDCA president Asit Kumar Mukherjee and secretary Ranjan Mohanty were present on both the occasions.
